Our northern mountain range is a paradise for the countryside lovers and fans of cultural and technical landmarks. Sport enthusiast will also appreciate the area. In the winter, you can enjoy the wide spreading maintained network of cross country skiing routes; Jizera Mountains in the summer are a popular destination for tourists and cyclists.
One of the pearls of CHKO Jizera Mountains (Nature Resort Jizera Mountains) is Jizerka. The settlement is a village reserve with reconstructed glass making plant and a mansion in the centre. The local geographical museum in former school includes the exhibition of Jizera Mountains history and present days.
Another settlement – Velká Jizera was located behind the central Jizera Mountain ridge on the left Jizera river bank. It was destroyed after the World War II when the Polish land was annexed by Germany. One building from the village remained – Cottage Górzystów. In the beginning of the cycling route alongside Jizera you can choose from two routes – the first route is on the road through Horní Polubný and further pass railway station ČD Kořenov. The second route leads pass Bukovce, and then it sharply descends to Jizera under the railway Tanvald–Harrachov (technical landmark – the steepest railway in the CR in section towards Kořenov). In Martinské valley, you can leave Jizera Mountains and turn to Harrachov, the western part of Krkonoše National Park.
The heart of Krkonoše are Harrachov and Rokytnice n. Jizerou, a recognized skiing, tourist, and sport centres and also centres for the summer and winter family holidays. The offer of Harrachov interesting locations and potential destinations is great (Harrachov glass making plant – second in Bohemia, Mining museum, roller bobsleigh, Mumlava waterfalls with giant pans). You can use the lift to Čertova hora with the bike and enjoy long descends with several options of return paths to Jizera.
The confluence with Mumlava in Mýto is during spring months a paradise for the fans of wild water and rafting. The current cycling route leads via Planýrka route into Paseky nad Jizerou. The Memorial of remote patriots is worth visiting – the exposition is extended with exhibits from Krkonoše violin school. The local Old School is a nice example of rural architecture. The current cycling route continues a bit further uphill – via Sklenařice, pass restaurant Mexiko (some local names resemble the target countries for produced beads), pass skiing resort Šachty to Vysoké nad Jizerou (Geographical museum, theatre – Theatre group Krakonoš with over two hundred years of tradition, viewing points). There are many options for returning to Jizera (route no. 4295, 4170, 4173 or 4174). You should not miss the town of Jilemnice, which offers its tow memorial zone with Curiosity Street, or Krkonoše museum in the castle.
In Horní Sytová, Jizera turn west to the region with open views and deep valleys called Upper Pojizeří (Semilsko, Železnobrodsko).
Three bridges are worth visiting – in Dolní Sytová, in Bystrá, and in Benešov u Semil. Technical museum is placed in Loukov with the collection of historical vehicles and other technical attractions. In Semily, you can visit the Museum and Pojizerská Gallery, and also seasonally the church gallery; Masaryk viewing point and popular Bozkovské dolomite caves are in the town vicinity. You can climb 744 meters high Kozákov, the guarding hill of Czech Paradise and Pojizeří. A narrow Jizera canyon from Semily to Podspálov is closed for the cyclists (nature reserve – the cyclists can bypass it through Podbozkov); it includes a railway, and also Rieger route for tourists with a sensibly reconstructed hydro-generating power plant in its end.
Kamenice flows to Jizera in this location and it is navigable for tourist boats to Labe during a good water level.
The next stop is Železný Brod – town of glass and rural landmarks (Town Museum with glass industry and historical exposition, Nature Reserve Trávníky, repaired bell tower, the possibility to visit some of glass making workshops, swimming pool with a toboggan).
The northern part of Bohemian Paradise includes Maloskalsko with rocky Vranovský ridge, Pantheon, ruins of Frýdštejn castle, and Maloskalská Drábovna. The outlines of Suché Skály can be viewed from the left bank high above the river. The following landmarks include Besedické rocks (Sokol and Kalich) the ruins of Zbirohy castle and Klokočské and Betlémské rocks. Jizera is most commonly navigated from Malá Skála to Dolánky. In Dolánky it is worth visiting the exhibition in Dlaskův farm. A cycling route leads to Turnov – a town with stone cutting tradition. Castle Hrubý Rohozec is located on the right river bank. In Turnov, it is worth visiting the Bohemian paradise Museum and the Visitor centre Granát with exhibits of traditional production of garnet jewels.
Turnov is the entrance to Hruboskalské Rock town with Valdštejn castle. The southern end of the sandstone block includes the reconstructed church in Všeň shining in the distance; Přepeře (also with reconstructed church) and Příšovice with valuable rural architecture (Bičíkův and Holanův farm) are located on Jizera right river bank. You can see the edges of Příhrazské rock town near Svijany (recognized brewery with regionally certified beer); Drábské světničky (Drábské rooms) and Valečov castle are at the foot of Mužský hill (excellent round viewing point). From here, you can return to Jizera pass the hill Káčov and ruins Zásadka, and visit the Romanesque church in Mohelnice nad Jizerou, the oldest in Bohemian Paradise. Now you are approaching castle Mnichovo Hradiště, which should not be missed.
The landscape becomes mildly undulated and flat in the southern direction, where Jizera flow near Mnichovo Hradiště leaves the area of sandstone blocks in Bohemian Paradise and starts forming meanders through Mladoboleslavsko. In the west it neighbours with the attractive landscape areas of Máchův region (Ralsko, Kokořínsko).
Jabkenické forests with many ponds are located in the south east part. The rock cabins on Jizera are located straight under Mnichovo Hradiště, and the cycling route passes the wide spreading forests near Klokočka Park, leaving by NPP Rečkov.
Mladá Boleslav area has many tourist attractions which should not be missed. The town over thousand years old has been related to automobile industry for the last hundred years, and it contains many landmarks (Škoda Auto Museum, castle with Mladoboleslavsko Museum, viewing tower of Stará Town hall, palace Templ, Czech Brothers‘ Convent, a number of valuable buildings by Jiří Kroha, Jewish cemetery). Many castles, mansions, ruins, and church buildings (ruins Zvířetice and Michalovická Putna, Loreta in Kosmonosy, Romanesque church in Vinec, castle Stránov in Jizerní Vtelno, ruins in Dražice) are placed on cycling route alongside the river flow. Mladoboleslavsko includes the network of low demand cycling routes which take you to other landmarks (Railway museum Sudoměř, Museum of historical motorbikes Rabakov, Memorial of B. Smetany Jabkenice). Polabí gradually continues in the south.
The right river bank in Jizera lower course includes the forests spreading towards an old double-town Brandýs nad Labem – Stará Boleslav (castle of “three emperors“, Church of St. Kosma and Damien – murder of St. Václav in 929). You can turn towards Čelákovice fortress or fortress in Dřevčice. Other activities are possible in Proboštská lakes, great sand quarries near Lhota and Mlékojedy in Neratovice direction. Spa Toušeň with ferrous mineral springs and promenade in cubist style are placed in Jizera outflow to Labe. The signposted cycling route takes place from there to the capital.
