Jizera, river made for watermen

Jizera is wild water. You can read it in many magazines for watermen. The river is quite demanding in its upper part mountain part, followed by a mild central flow starting in Podspálov above Železný Brod and ending in Polabská lowland valley in a pleasant quite style, unlike Vltava or Lužnice always full of watermen. Tourist navigation through low Jizera can be divided into several natural sections, skilled watermen can manage more of them in one day, if they perceive the navigation as sporting rowing without the contacts with the surroundings. We will focus particularly on the sections in Český ráj:

Spálov (Paraplíčko) – Malá Skála (Žlutá plovárna or Křížky) – about 13 kilometres long route, obrázek se otevře v novém okně

Upon starting and potential activities on Paraplíčka rapids, follows the pass through Železný Brod, improved with a weir behind the bridge. The weir is usually open in the middle during higher water and is easy to pass, during low water it is passed on the left.

The conditions for passing Železný Brod will probably change, the new constructed hydro-generating plant will open this season.

Shortly after Železný Brod, we approach the weir in Splzov. It is passed on the right. Unless there is not enough water under the weir during low state, it is suitable to transfer the boat into the raceway on the left bank and continue there.

Behind the turn, you can see the Pantheon ridge on Malá Skála. This sporting centre of Český ráj provides many activities – both sporting and cultural. In Žlutá plovárna, you can hire a bike or climbing tools, and set off to the nearby rocks. The swimming pool is open from April to October, upon order in other months.

Malá Skála – Dolánky (about 8 kilometres)

, obrázek se otevře v novém okněMaloskalský weir under Žlutá plovárna is always navigable, the sluice gate in the middle drags a bit but the boat perforation is not possible. The Boučkův farm is placed behind the bridge on the left bank. Two kilometres further down, in village Křížky, there is an interesting place for a stop, potentially overnight stay.

– house SUNDISK. This facility, partially reconstructed old building adjusted for tourist accommodation provides the options of stylish cheap accommodation, and also camping on the meadow by the river, fireplace, grills, etc. The section from Malá Skála to Dolánky (Turnov) is the most frequented part of lower Jizera, but it still not as full as Vltava, Sázava, and Lužnice in the summer. In the beautiful valley, clear water full of salmon trout and grayling, it is easy to pass the sand and pebble river bed during low waters in few locations with shallow waters. Zrcadlová koza, traditional watermen pub, invites for a stop in front of Dolánky on the left river bank. Weir in Dolánky is passed on the right bank. The clients of Žlutá plovárna stop here, if you have your own boat you can get and continue in Turnov direction.

Dolánky – Mnichovo Hradiště (about 25 kilometres)

From Dolánky, you pass a pleasant valley with Hrubohozec castle and Turnov. Both can be visited... The following weir was reconstructed, it is a bag weir and it does not include a sluice gate for watermen. The boat must be carried over., obrázek se otevře v novém okně

The river flows decently in further sections in a beautiful low land landscape; it includes slow streams above the weirs. You pass Přepeře, Ploukonice, Příšovice. Jizera further meanders through the open landscape, avoids the centres of villages and still maintains decently clean water and interesting surroundings: Brewery Svijany, Drábské světničky, Mnichovo Hradiště.

Similar character takes you further to the confluence with Labe – through Mladá Boleslav, Benátky nad Jizerou (slalom race), and many more interesting locations.
