Important trade routes that passed through the river valley later gave rise to settlements being established. The area’s vast natural resources supported the growth of settlements both along the river and in the mountain region. The changing elevation throughout the valley made it possible for the river to serve as a source of energy. Footpaths were replaced by roads and, eventually, in the 19th century, by a railroad line. However, despite all its technical progress, the valley has remained a beautiful corner of nature.
The Bohemian Paradise Association and its partners put together the Greenway Jizera Project (GWJ), whose purpose is to create a tourist corridor along the Jizera River that will take you to the Jizerské hory Mountains, via the Western Krkonoše Mountains, Bohemian Paradise and the Polabí Region all the way to Prague. You will discover the charm of several distinctive landscape types in the Czech Republic and encounter local natural, historical and technical locations and folk architecture. The cycling routes that traverse these regions lead you on both paved paths and quiet roads. Today, new cycling paths have been built in certain sections of the corridor and footbridges now span the river; you can find boat, scooter and bicycle rentals here as well as other tourist services.
